Charlotte Olympia and Olympia Le-Tan are two of my favorite accessory designers at the moment, mainly for the reason that both these women fill a void in shoes and accessories that no other designers can. It’s feminine, referential, and most importantly, nostalgic but modern. One thing that makes me feel sentimental over Olympia Le Tan‘s hand bags is the way she incorporates the feel of hardcover books with classic titles such as War and Peace and Jane Eyre. I don’t think I need to repeat how much I love vintage and time period pieces in all forms, but I started collecting old hard cover books printed from the early 1900′s onward when my friend gave me an 80-year old copy of Bambi before leaving for grad school. There’s really something about the heavy weight paper and canvas binding that speaks volumes about a time when things were built to last.
Charlotte Olympia, on the other hand, designs these heels that remind me Old Hollywood and destination sites for 1960′s film stars. From banana leaf print platforms that mimics the walls of The Beverly Hills Hotel, shoe names that reads like a Beyond the Valley of the Dolls casting list, and cute motifs like cats or Charlotte’s Web, Charlotte Olympia shoes are quirky and personal. They are shoes that have a lot of character to them, much like the time periods they represent. Needless to say, shoes with names like Paloma and Daphne feel far more like taking a walk with new companions than the saturated red sole.
